  19. The Hawkes and son price list for 1914 gives a good insight on how modern Italian violins were valued at the time they were being made. Hawkes were the sole importers in England for E.Rocca, G. Pedrazzini and G. Schwarz. G.Pedrazzini = £24 E. Rocca = 25 guineas (equiv. £26) G. Schwarz = £20 T.E. Hesketh, (Manchester, u.k.) = 20 guineas (equiv. £21) Bohuslav Lantner (Prague) = £10 Hawkes and son "Maggini" violin = £7 7s

  21. from what I understand the pigment "Van Dyke Brown" was traditionally made with the Cassel earth, whereas "Van Dyke Crystals" are unrelated, made from walnut husks and still widely available (at the least the ones from Cornelissen are)
