  3. They were done both with and without, didn't find any discernible difference in how the afterlength affected the wolf. It pretty much stayed put the entire time. What I did notice was that longer afterlengths did reduce the clarity and power of the string.
  4. A friend of mine owns one of his Brothers Amati copy cellos, built in the 80s. Just a tremendous tone, and playing on it was what inspired Lynn Harrell to sell the Strad he had just purchased from Jacqueline Du Pre's estate.
  5. I've used one before, found that the best afterlength for me was the standard 1:6 afterlength after much experimentation and changed it out for a standard ConCarbo. Found absolutely zero effect on the wolf, no matter what I would tune the afterlength to. It was a cool experiment, but I would personally recommend the cheaper, non-tunable ConCarbos. They do give a great sound to many cellos.

  7. I've seen some of Chris' bridges and they're just beautiful. Very nice, clean work.
  8. Warchal Brilliants can be quite crisp and tinny in my experience. I prefer the sound of Warchal Ambers over the Brilliants, those could be a good fit. Some flavor of Pirastro Perpetuals might work as well if you're looking for a slightly darker sound.

  10. I once played on a Vuillaume cello with a back made by Mr. Weller (the original back was irretrievably damaged at some point in the past). Really fine work he did!
  11. A friend of mine has a Guasti- it's a good bow for the price, as others have said it's Brazilian. Engraved silver ferrule and button. I think he uses it as a spare when he doesn't want to use his Thomassin.
  12. Janos Starker had a bridge with hollow feet. I believe the consensus was that design was inferior but it was easier for unskilled luthiers to fit to the instruments.
  13. I have a modern cello with a grain texture you can really feel on the top, it's oil varnished. Don't know the process the maker used to get the effect, though.
  14. We musicians always have that little spark of hope that we've stumbled on a hidden gem and there are certain sellers who make a living out of exploiting that optimism. If I had a dollar for every German factory instrument that was described as "unlabeled, possibly Italian" I could retire early.
  15. I feel that ratio is a myth. Just like with a violin, you're paying for the name, provenance, and condition. Bows are such personal things, and in my experience, it's best to play every bow you can get your hands on, even the ones way out of your price range, so that you know exactly what playing characteristics you're looking for.
