  2. Are you even serious right now? I really hope not. As obviously as it looks in the video, the bottom part is removed to reveal how the installation of the post works. The process happens through the f-hole. After reading through this thread, I am really surprised at how bitter some of the luthiers are about this product.
  3. Ok guys, this thread is becoming ridiculous. From a Principal Cellist in Germany: Mr. Hamberger has installed my soundpost at the recommendation of a colleague who plays on a Gagliano violin (who of course has it installed as well). This was in December 2017. Since then, the instrument (French ca. 1820) has been more stable than ever, maintaining the sound quality throughout the seasons. To be more clear: the instrument is easier to play, the response of the lower strings is much quicker and crispier, the higher register sings better and more naturally, the resonance has improved by at least 20%. As a musician, I rely on my ears and can honestly tell you, I will NEVER go back to a wooden soundpost.

  12. From my experience as a player, the Kevlar tailcord does improve the response of an instrument. Many of my cellist colleagues have changed the metal tailcord on their Akustikus Tailpiece with Kevlar and are satisfied with the result. I personally prefer using the Bois d’Harmonie Tailpiece on both of my Cellos, since it weighs significantly less and looks undoubtedly more elegant.

  14. I believe that this video demonstrates that the biggest difference will always be made by the player and never the instrument. Nothing new, I’ve have witnessed this phenomenon many times in the past. As an example, when the teacher takes the door with strings from the student to demonstrate a passage—the teacher will make it sound more than decent. It is the same in major competitions. Many times, the people who play Guadagninis and Cerutis are failing to go past the second round. I would like to end with a joke. There is a major Violin Competition and the first candidate arrives in a Ferrari. He opens the door, steps out and grabs his beautiful golden period Strad. After his performance everybody including the jury are disappointed with how terrible he played. “Terrible”, shouted a jury member as he walked off stage. The second candidate arrives in a Masserati. He opens the door, steps out and grabs his beautiful Guarneri del Gesu.   21. It is true. The biggest part of any auditions are the Solo Concertos usually from the Classical (1st round) and Romantic (2nd round) periods. Here, they look for a player that can project a big but beautiful sound, especially since most auditions are held in big concert halls. If the people seated in the middle and towards the end of the hall cannot hear you well, it cannot be good. The ability to blend is seen in the orchestral parts required and later in the trial—if one succeeds the audition.
  22. If you are not convinced with the sound quality, don’t buy it. You might find other instruments in the future in the same range that could sound better than this one. Considering that you are doing auditions, projection is one major factor. Also, don’t settle for an instrument that sounds clean and warm under the ear. The best projecting instruments sound harsh under the ear and warm in the audience.

  24. Yes, you are right. I have an acquaintance who bought an original Eugenio Degani violin for 600€ off of eBay about an year ago. He got it authenticated by Eric Blot. I am sure there are some bargains from time to time! [but not this time]
