From my experience as a player, the Kevlar tailcord does improve the response of an instrument. Many of my cellist colleagues have changed the metal tailcord on their Akustikus Tailpiece with Kevlar and are satisfied with the result. I personally prefer using the Bois d’Harmonie Tailpiece on both of my Cellos, since it weighs significantly less and looks undoubtedly more elegant.

I believe that this video demonstrates that the biggest difference will always be made by the player and never the instrument. Nothing new, I’ve have witnessed this phenomenon many times in the past. As an example, when the teacher takes the door with strings from the student to demonstrate a passage—the teacher will make it sound more than decent. It is the same in major competitions. Many times, the people who play Guadagninis and Cerutis are failing to go past the second round. I would like to end with a joke. There is a major Violin Competition and the first candidate arrives in a Ferrari. He opens the door, steps out and grabs his beautiful golden period Strad. After his performance everybody including the jury are disappointed with how terrible he played. “Terrible”, shouted a jury member as he walked off stage. The second candidate arrives in a Masserati. It is true. The biggest part of any auditions are the Solo Concertos usually from the Classical (1st round) and Romantic (2nd round) periods. Here, they look for a player that can project a big but beautiful sound, especially since most auditions are held in big concert halls. If the people seated in the middle and towards the end of the hall cannot hear you well, it cannot be good. The ability to blend is seen in the orchestral parts required and later in the trial—if one succeeds the audition.

If you are not convinced with the sound quality, don’t buy it. You might find other instruments in the future in the same range that could sound better than this one. Considering that you are doing auditions, projection is one major factor. Also, don’t settle for an instrument that sounds clean and warm under the ear. The best projecting instruments sound harsh under the ear and warm in the audience.

Yes, you are right. I have an acquaintance who bought an original Eugenio Degani violin for 600€ off of eBay about an year ago. He got it authenticated by Eric Blot. I am sure there are some bargains from time to time! [but not this time]

Being a musician, I rely simply on what I hear and nothing more. The sound tells me everything I need to know. Having fitted wooden soundposts my whole life by some of the best professionals (the last one being Florian Leonhardt in London), the Hamberger made a clear distinction between the two. The end.

Absolutely not! I only suggested that one has to try for themselves, before criticizing and dismantling an innovation. I am only bothered by people who choose to throw opinions based on nothing but prejudice.

I am a professional cellist and after reading your comments on this Topic, would like to give my (musician) opinion on the matter. After using the Hamberger Soundpost (having it fitted in Munich by Mr Hamberger) for over a year, I have to say that it had a major positive effect on my Cello. The sound had a sudden increase in overtones, particularly lower partials, increased projection (about 20% louder and crispier) and produced a quicker response in low dynamics or fast passages. This was immediately confirmed by my colleagues, who also knew my instrument from before. During this year, I have experimented a few times with the tension and position, a thing that I would have never even dreamed of as a musician. I might understand why certain luthiers might be against such an innovation (since it takes from their work), but would also recommend to give it a chance and try it before having a clear opinion.

I am still waiting for somebody to give me some direction in identifying this cello. Somebody told me that it looks like the work of Chanot.
