I worked for a very high profile “maker” in the U.K. (I would really love to mention a name) and can assure you that this sort of practice has gone on for sometime and will continue to as long as there’s money to be made. I left this particular workshop because of it. Just as Nik Kyklo attempted, we can source a global-political cause for this brand of dishonesty but of course it boils down to a decay of decent ethics broken down by the aged-old greed. “Money doesn’t know ethics” - but aren’t we supposed to?
  2. Here I have a Maggini copy with a klingenthal maker’s or trade stamp stamped on the inside of back. It reads ‘A...something. klingenthal’ Seems like a slightly better Klingenthal fiddle - scroll is neatly done, fully blocked corners, neat linings, one piece back. Anyone have any references or thoughts?
  3. Very good point - Amatis are not for the posh! (not the copies, anyway) I definately get what you are saying; London was setting the trend for style and that the provincial makers were a little less bothered about the current fashion for making (Benjamin Banks, among others, being an exception). I do like English fiddles too - plenty of character.
  4. Thanks for all the responses. It had to be English - did anyone see the Anglicised 'Anthony Amati' - has to be a bit of wry humour. Which Furber? John Furber (1810-45) seemed to be making amait copies. I was thinking this may be circa 1830 but didn't the fashion for the amati form in England lose out to the strad somewhere around 1810?
  5. Hi, This is my first post here, so go easy with me! I have an 19th Century English (I think) violin. There is an old hand writtten Amati label which made me think of some of the copyists of Soho around the 1800s. The varnish is very good and certainly of that era. Some former repairs - to the button and neck and top. Hand written in ink on the belly underside is 'Repaired by Haynes & Co London 1895' and on the back in pencil 'repaired by J something Jones, Bristol 1875'. the inside ribs are quickly worked - the toothed-plane marks have been left and the linings and blocks are swiftly made. Back, ribs and neck appear to be from the same tree. Not sure where to place it, and so any help would be welcome. Thanks - Harry
