  1. Hi. I've started to try using this practicing method for pieces since September. Here Sassmannshaus mentioned 'don't practice sophisticated sound colors until the piece is memorized, in tune, has good rhythm and good sound'. I get the definitions of 'memory', 'intonation' and 'rhythm', but what about 'sound'? What does it mean if it's not about 'sound colors (timbre)'? Thank you https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XruguE9EofA
  2. Hi. Assuming the tip of the thumb supports the bow between the frog and the leather: When a bow is tightened, how wide should the gap between frog and leather be? This question came to my mind as the cheap bow that I'm using has a gap that can fit my whole tip of the thumb, yet the expensive bow I've just got has only a little gap when tightened. Thank you
  3. Hi. I enjoyed the 15th Henryk Wieniawski Violin Competition on https://www.youtube.com/user/WieniawskiHenryk/videos this Summer. I've learned a lot from watching and listening. I wonder where can I watch other international violin competitions online? Here are the other international violin competitions for adults I'm interested in: Città di Brescia International Violin Competition International Fritz Kreisler Competition International Jean Sibelius Violin Competition International Violin Competition Leopold Mozart in Augsburg International Violin Competition Henri Marteau International Violin Competition of Indianapolis Michael Hill International Violin Competition Moscow International David Oistrakh Violin Competition Paganini Competition Thank you
  4. Thank you. Yes, I now practice with the Etymotic 20XS earplugs.
  5. Hi. I hear a constant, low buzzing sound (it is a D2) in my right ear since 6th Nov, 2019. It is being heard most clearly when practicing in a silent room and sleeping. The doctors I went to are persistent that it is a withdrawal symptom of my antidepressant dosage reduction from 10mg per day to 10mg per two days during 1st Nov to 28th Nov 2019; I have been on Seroxat since 2014 due to my panic disorder. They've increased my dosage to 30mg per day. I've booked an appointment to the Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) but the earliest is 5th March. One night it was extremely loud and I had a flash of thought that I wanted to end my life... I don't know if I'm able to get through this period of time (which can be temporary or permanent); I've already stopped playing due to temporomandibular disorder and repetitive strain injury for huge amounts of time respectively, I know if I apply to delay my course I'm likely to do nothing and weep about my tinnitus all day in my room, yet, I am not confident in doing my recitals and submitting my essays on time... I don't know what to do.
  6. Hi. Currently my university assigned me a teacher who is from the Russian School. They advised my 1) wrist should never bend inwards even at the tip of the bow and 2) upper arm is always on the lower level as the bow. I have huge respect for this teacher because they play very powerfully and I've always admired Russian music, but from what I've learnt I've always 1) bent my wrist inwards when bowing towards the tip of the bow and 2) keep my upper arm always on the same string level as the bow. I believe having an open mind to try new things is the key to learning as much as possible, but I really want to stay the same; yet, I don't want to show unwillingness of learning or maybe that's the reason why I can't make a big beautiful sound? Please give me some advice. Thank you. Below is the Straight Bow Geometry that I've been following for years.
  7. Update! The first one is from Caprice No.1 from 36 Caprices for Violin, Op.3 by Federigo Fiorillo! The second one is from Study No.26 from 42 Studies by Rodolphe Kreutzer! Finally found them!
  8. @GoPractice Yes! Yes! Yes! Theoretical analysis suits me for memorizing Bach! Thank you for outlining the Corrente.
  9. Thanks all. I'll try your suggestions TMR! I feel full of power now!
  10. @violinnewb Thanks! I'll try listening while reading the sheet and humming it.
  11. Hi! I'm learning the Corrente from Violin Partita No.2, BWV 1004 by Johann Sebastian Bach. It's like a maze to me! I find it difficult to memorize; how do you guys do it? Thank you
  12. Hi. I'm trying to make a progressive repertoire building plan. I see from this list of Violin Solos, there is the Variations on "God Save the Queen" by Henryk Wieniawski. And it does not refer to the Variations on ''God Save the King'', Op.9 by Niccolò Paganini, as it is also included in the list. http://violinmasterclass.com/en/graded-repertoire/violin-solos Of course, I'm still working on the fundamental Johann Sebastian Bach, but I hope to make sure even the information on the hardest solo pieces are clear. Thank you
  13. Hi. I use flat bow hair as default. My teacher wants me to tilt the bow for a certain movement. Yet, awkwardly I am struggling [analyzing every decision, as usual] on whether tilting the bow by: 1) rolling the bow with fingers 2) by bending the wrist [keeping the same bow grip] Which way is smarter? Why? Thank you
  14. I'll use "L5" as the fastest bow motion the instrument can tolerate, i.e. almost on the fingerboard. Thank you for explaining.
