  1. >is it too dandy to own an instrument worth so much that should have belonged to someone much more skilled and dedicated?

I hope not. I am too a novice with a few months of private lessons in the past. But I have the luck to own some beautiful violins with good tone. Of course, it is a waste for the violins, but it is such a joy when you know people who can play well to play your violins. It is a shared joy. Besides, how can we know that we cannot one day become more sophisticated players ourselves? Violins outlive human beings and as a result our bad playing skills as well.

Go for a good violin. "A thing of beauty is a joy forever."

    Enjoy!

  2. >If your soundpost is cut correctly and "fit" for the correct location, it should not fall unless you squeeze the sides.

My expereince was a bit different. Since I didn't know what I was doing, I tightened up the strings a great deal and then didn't feel right (afraid of soundpost crack like other one I have), so I loosen the strings up. The soundpost also fell off.

Since the soundpost is the topic here, I have a question regarding soundpost crack:

    1. Crack on the bird's eye maple back: What is the possible cause for it? Temperature? Humidity? Or just too much tension?

    2. After the crack is repaired by a reputable luthier, what are the things I should pay attention to avoid any more cracks?

The top is the only thing which is not bird eye on the violin. By the way, this violin is about 80 to 100 years old, German made.

  3. No. I didn't try to contact the seller, who seemed to be nasty. He left a retaliating negative feedback stating something like go find a teacher then the tone of the violin [he sold] will be better.

As I agreed with jaf67 and Regis in principle, with an auction format though, price is not an absolute indicator for quality. In this case, what ticked me is that the seller was lying through the teeth!!! My thing is this: If something is cheap in quality, say so. That's fine. But dressing up the description and selling cheap stuff, that's unacceptable.

By the way, I like your photography site. How did you put the copyright on the photos?

  4. That's usually true. But for an auction format, $29 doesn't necessarily mean "cheap". The seller claimed that the case was worth $600.00 so go figure.

The other case I was talking about, which came with my "cheap" Chinese violin (purchase price $195.00) is MUCH, MUCH better than the one this seller sells!

  5. It certainly doesn't look like quality product as he claimed in his description. The interior velvet feels so cheap as well and I am wondering whether others on the board bought his stuff before. If so, I would like to get feedback on the products. I am certainly not happy with it.

  6. I recently bought a violin case from alrongroup of eBay. Not too happy with the quality of the case. The quality is worse than the one, which came with my Chinese student violin.

Does anyone have the experience with the seller?

    alrongroup:

New Deluxe 3/4 or 4/4 full size Violin Oblong Case NR!

  7. >Did you think this violin might actually have been made by Stradivari?

I don't think so since the label has something else on it.

I was wondering whether these well established-violin makers also made 3/4 (or 7/8) becaue that's the size I need. If they did make smaller violins, I will have a chance of owning one and also enjoy playing it.

The question was my deep wish. :-)

  8. Yeah, I remembered that there was one time the professor turned off the light for a long time. Not a sound in the room. Then one student finally asked him to turn on the light again, he said, "Oh, I didn't want to disturbed you guys..." :-)

    Nickia,

I heard your concerto. Kudos! Excellent for 6 months learner. If you can play that well, I would tend to think the teacher A (the one you had the first or still have?) did a pretty decent job, if not an excellent job, teaching you. But it doesn't hurt to have a new teacher and find out what the first teacher had missed when he was teaching you.

    Keep at it!
