  1. I am cleaning up my old posts and saw this one. Sorry I missed it then.

    +++++++++++++++

    I can understand you want a 3/4 but why a 3/4?

    +++++++++++++++

    Because I am a small adult. My violin teacher selected a 3/4 violin with 1/2 bow for me years ago. So I thought I needed to use a 3/4 violin.

    I wonder whether I can use a larger bow even if I cannot reach the tip when I bow???

  2. If the fiddle is sent to a residential address, they usually need a signature for the package. If there's no one there to sign, they will leave a notice asking the receipient to pick the package up . If you have the tracking number, why don't you see what it says on the computer, especially who signed for the package.

    Have you contacted eBay to get the seller/sender's telephone number? Call instead of emailing. Unfortunately, the transporters will not deal with reciepient directly since it was the sender who paid. So in a sense what they do is right although the receipients usually the ones who suffer. I suspected that the package might be in one of Fedex's facility, where the receipient was supposed to pick up the package.

    Best luck!

    Raphael Bronstein, another Auer student who knew Heifetz used to say "he'a a tango man..."

    This certainly means that Heifetz would have qualified to play in the lobby, had he so wished.

    ++++++++++

    Dear Larry,

    In light of the new development you provided, we are now able to conclude the reason why Heifetz never played in the lobby -- He's a tango man.

    The man couldn't play in the lobby because it took Three to Tango. Although we've got Midori, we are still missing the third party. Heifetz, in my humble professional opinion, will never play in the lobby until maybe next millenium or so if he's lucky.

  4. violizzy, Are dutches all this polite or just you?

    Although politics are highly charged, apparently quite a few people are able to make a living off it. Why don't we forget about the scary scales for a moment and have a nice coffee break?

    Enjoy!

    Subject: On President Bush and his FIVE week vacation.....

    "President Bush is going on his annual vacation. The White House says

    he goes to his Texas Ranch to unwind. I'm thinking, when does he wind?"

    --David Letterman

    "As you know, President Bush is taking 5 weeks off. It's like he's

    still in the National Guard." --Jay Leno

    "It turns out President Bush can run again in the next election. Now I

    know you're only supposed to be allowed two terms, but the Supreme

    Court said if you count his vacation time, he's barely served one." --Jay

    Leno

    "President Bush is on a five-week vacation. How many folks get five

    weeks off a year? You know, if I want five weeks off I have to have open

    heart surgery, for God's sake." --David Letterman

    "The president jumped on a plane to start a five-week vacation. This

    will be the longest presidential vacation in 36 years. This means President

    Bush has now been on vacation for 27Ùª of his presidency. That means the

    country could be 27Ùª more screwed up than it already is." --Jimmy

    Kimmel

    "President Bush is at his ranch in Crawford, Texas, and here's the good

    news -- he says he will only stay until Crawford is capable of self

    rule." --David Letterman

    "Bush woke up this morning, saw his shadow and now -- six more weeks of

    vacation." --Jay Leno

    "President Bush is vacationing in Crawford, Texas. He will be

    vacationing for five weeks. That's a long time. I don't think he has an

    exit strategy for his vacation either." --David Letterman

    "Now is a great time for President Bush to go on vacation because Iraq

    is pretty much under control. But a White House spokesman said Bush is

    using his vacation to reconnect with regular people. So you know what that

    means -- he's drinking again." --David Letterman

    "After President Bush signed the new transportation bill, he said it's

    not just enough to sign the bill -- people have to show up and do the work.

    Then he went back to his five-week vacation." --Jay Leno

    "President Bush still having his five-week vacation. Today President

    Bush announced he is going to leave his ranch in Texas to visit Idaho for

    two days. However, Bush told his supporters, 'Don't worry, I won't do any

    work there either.'" --Conan O'Brien

    "President Bush is on week three of his marathon five-week vacation. In

    fact, he has been gone on vacation for so long that today in

    Washington, a judge ruled that a young couple with two children can now

    legally move into the White House because it appears to have been abandoned

    by its previous tenants." --Jay Leno

    "President Bush is on a five-week vacation. From what? President Bush,

    before he went on vacation, he signed a bill that will extend daylight

    savings another month. He said it proves we're winning the war on

    darkness" --David Letterman

    "President Bush is now in the second week of his five-week vacation

    down there in Crawford, Texas. He's been taking a lot of criticism for

    this long vacation and his aides say he has his laptop with him so he can

    still play Solitaire and Minesweep -- so it's business as usual." --Jay Leno

    "President Bush is taking his summer vacation. It's a five-week

    vacation. This is his fiftieth vacation in the last five years -- that's about

    the national average isn't it? During his five-week vacation, he will

    continue to receive national security briefings. He won't be reading them,

    but he will receive them." --David Letterman

    "President Bush talked tough today. He said he's not backing out, he's

    staying the course for as long as it takes. He's in it for the long

    haul. Not Iraq -- his 5-week vacation." --Jay Leno

    "A lot of people are every critical of President Bush for taking the

    entire month of August off for his vacation. But his staff points out,

    there's nothing at the White House he can't do at the ranch because the

    ranch is fully equipped. It's got the treadmill, the weight room, the

    jogging path, the big screen TV, they get Nickelodeon. It's got

    everything he would do." --Jay Leno

    "President Bush is on a three-week vacation down in Crawford, Texas,

    and it's what they call a working vacation. And staff say it is an

    important time because it's time for him to kick back. And I'm thinking,

    when does this guy kick forward?" --David Letterman

    "So Congress is on recess and Bush is on vacation -- the town is empty.

    It's so lonely in D.C. right now the NRA and the oil lobbies are just

    giving money to each other." --Jay Leno

  5. With my IBM T30 (2.4 GHz processor) DSL 100 mps connection: Less than 1 second.

    With my IBM T23 (1.3 GHz Processor) DSL 10 mps connection: Longer than 1 second, but don't know the exact time. However, it is still relatively fast.

    Having said that if I reload the page (or any page for that matter), it could take up the "running-out-of-my-patience" seconds.

  6. Pandora,

    Yes, I have the same problems and started a new topic: Windows 2000 vs Windows XP pro (in fingerboard???)

    I originally I used the laptop with windows XP pro and a lot of protection software and I lost a lot of functionalities you just described. Then I used my spare laptop, which has Windows 2000 with much less protection software and I am able to use all the functionalities I would like to use.

    So I starts to suspect that it is Windows XP might have a lot of "undocumented" features we are unaware of.

    Would you please let me know what operating system you are using and what kind of virus, firewall/internet security and spyware software you use on your computer? I would like to hack it.

    Thanks a lot in advance.

  7. Michael, I thought the Eastman VL906 is the best, right? Once I know of their best, it is difficult for me to settle for a lesser quality stuff. Not that I deserve the best quality at the stage of violin playing (more likely killing), but I just feel... Does this irrational something, something intrinsic to women or just me????

  8. I have been using the laptop with Windows XP pro on it and a lot of functionalities have lost (due to the fact that it doesn't allow pop-ups). I originally thought that was because of the Norton Internet Security problem. Then now I am using another laptop with Windows 2000 on it and it also has Internet Security on it (but doesn't have other spyware killers). As you can see, I am starting a new topic.

    Does anyone have the same problem I am having with Windows XP Pro?

    Thanks for your feedback in advance.

  9. Hey hanxiao, Adah, why are you pissed off by the tone of the woman? Business is business. What made you think she didn't just take it out on you? You were a willing bait-biter.

    I thought I had you as a candidate for my daughter. Huh, is it still a good idea??? (Are you having a good laugh?)

    Now serious "business":

    ++++++++++++++++++++

    I read earlier you do not play but you collect them. how do you test how they sound like?

    ++++++++++++++++++++

    Good question. You're right! I don't know how to test sound so I buy my violins first and bring them to people who do. I am fortunate enough to get to know a violinist also on this board (he's super nice and unbelievably generous with his time) and through him get to know his luthier. So I've got two guiding hands to help me determine whether I've got junk. Fortunately, the recent purchases seem to be very decent, if not great deals. So I am a happy violin dummy.

  10. Gee, I lost the track and cannot bear to re-read everything. Anyway, my view is an addition to what Michael (Molnar) posted, and here you go:

    (1) If you really want her business (or anyone else's), do as all salesman will do:

    A courteous follow up call (within an appropriate period in between calls if needed). You may want to add some marketing strategy as well as one post suggested.

    (2) If you can afford to lose her business, you should go ahead with your schedule. But give her a call and let her know that other students are waiting for her child's spot. If she cannot decide at set time, then you have to move on.

    My advice: Business is business. When you turn off the lights in your office, turn off the office in your head as well.

  11. Guta observed the player's psychology very well.

    +++++++++++++++++++++

    For any player, even a beginner, having a violin that you love is really important. It inspires you to give your best, to practise and to explore possibilities.

    +++++++++++++++++++++

    My very first violin was picked by my violin teacher. He told me that the one he picked sounded really good, blah, blah, blah. But the problem was that I liked another one in the shop better. Well, I am sure my teacher was right and did it in my best interest so I rented the one I didn't like that. When the practice time comes, I could only bear about 15" to 30" with it.

    But then I borrowed violin from a trumpet player next door and I just loved to paly it. My teacher also felt that I played better with the borrowed than the rental one.

    For some odd reason, the trumpet player would not sell the violin to me, and I am still missing THAT violin, which in retrospect appeared to be Maggini model (as I learned more about violin). Up to date, any violin looks like the one I wanted years back still lightening up my eyes.

    For me as player (although a super lame player), I would really want to get some thing I will not want to part than something I don't care for that much although I know I may have to spend money on another one later. My justification is: I will want to buy another one one way or another anyway.

  12. Have you looked into www.violinist.com? I think they have a list of luthiers worldwide if you cannot get a referral.

    I flew BA before and I think I had carry on then (I always have carry on when I fly). Is that a new policy?

    It sounds like you might end up chaning in Hathrawl airport (Spelling please...). I had a very unpleasant experience there 5 years ago and have always tried to avoid that airport every since with success. I don't know whether things have changed there. If not, you may want to travel as light as possible.

    Good luck!

    have had Ebay dealings with Premier Violins (Jonathan Bloom) and I woudn't believe ANY claim he would make.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++

    That said, bidders should be wary of the "unclaimed" as well. The two condistions are taken directly from his disclaimer. His auctions seem to end at pretty high price (on eBay) and what bothers me is the private bidding business.

    Disclaimer:
