  1. That's not completely wrong from an "endless highway" point of view. Here we would say it's a region in another country (Austria close to the German border) on the other side of the mountains with little villages like Ischl or Goysern. Just to give the owner of the violin a more detailled picture.
  2. Certainly I agree with this. The scroll could be from Mittenwald, too, but a bit later.
  3. Applying a bit fairy dust it looks like a throughneck with a painted maple or beech fingerboard and inked purfling, therefore most probably a low grade Salzkammergut violin from the 2nd half of the 19th century, well preserved.
  4. So it's not clear why it didn't survive, when it was superior. It might be an interesting idea and you should apply a patent for it (if you haven't done already), but it should be clear that this design is based on pure speculation only, shouldn't it?
  5. Except that it has three dreadful and unrepaired long cracks right through the center of the belly, what's rather unusual even for these.
  6. They would had a lot of extra work to make a sound check of all these masses of serial violins.
  7. Just that it was more easy to use the Cremonese mould if he learned from there, So you would need to explain why he didn't.
  8. Possibly the adjuster isn't original, for being French of the period I would it expect to have pinned rings. Nürnberger used similar adjusters in the 20th century, but I never knew they had also slides with the small heel attached. They also inserted lenses sometimes, but I can't see this frog and head model being from the Nürnberger shop. Who knows where this features were copied elsewhere.
  9. Like it was mine. The chippy varnish and the way the purfling goes through the corner tips seems to be the giveaway. Probably Neuner & Hornsteiner 2nd half of the 19th.
  10. As I pointed out at the first page of the thread, the Paulus label isn‘t from the original maker, but could be in the best case a dealer label. These weren’t glued in the ribs or other discret places as a sort of hidden signature to leave room for the signature of a wholesaler or the like, otherwise they would not make any sense at all. I would rather speculate about the usual fakers silliness, if I were to speculate at all. Or maybe somebody inserted it through the fhole and was too awkward to get it to the right place.

John Dilworth assumed (in an Amati essay, as far as I remember) that Allessandro Gagliano learned the craft from some Füssen emigrants, who used at this period the building without mould method. Personally I can't tell from direct observation, but this appears much more logical than to construct an interesting but somehow over-sophisticated special Gagliano mould. If he had learned from Omobono, why should he have made such a complicated own mould at all? To call oneself Alumnus Stradivarius or Cremonensis without being this was factually quite common in 18th century Italian violin making, for example Balestrieri or Guadagnini.
  13. Maybe the lens is lost, or the eye was made as an imitation of a picture bow. Two more things to ask are if the adjuster button has pins and if the metal slide of the frog is pinned or screwed. It could be French from the late 19th century.

  16. Maybe the correct reading is Voldemort then. Glogau was in Niederschlesien (lower Silesia), south-east of Saxony, and is now located in Poland, named Glogów.
  17. I wondered many times about the correct reading of the name, too. It doesn't look like "classical" Kurrent, but there were many regional and local variations. The middle letter looks to me like a "d", but the first not like an H nor S. Difficult.
  18. A label with an 1800 date glued above a repair note from a more than 70 years later period appears to be spurious, that's all. The violin itself could be well from around 1800 IMO. For which reason the label was glued in such an awkward way we can only speculate.
  19. I would assume a Mittenwald origin ca mid 19th century or even a bit earlier.

  22. It already has a large, badly repaired soundpost crack (as well as other issues with seams).
  23. Does the back belong to the rest at all? From the photos it looks quite different, especially the varnish, though both have inked purfling.
  24. So that‘s another road to fame. The writing is making the 1800 Paulus label a Fahrkarte, because some of these inscriptions had dates from the 1870s and 80s years.
  25. This guy seems to have repaired, meaning grafted, thousands of Vogtlandish violins, as often as I have found his signature in such instruments (one below).
