  2. Another extreme case, the bottle almost full, little power either. So, Mr.Oakes, he reasoned that there must be something in between. He said also that smaller holes would result more nasal sound. Of course, there are other parameters, like thickness along the f-hole, or things like that which are more than I would be able or like to understand. I respect highly your thoughts and expertise and you made great violins. (verybody knows, public knowlege now)

  4. (continue) If you tape the f-holes completey then Oakes' theory is confirmed in this particular case (not optimal ,not much of power ). I don't think using adhesive tape is equivalent to having smaller size of f-hole.
  5. That is exactly NOT my point to make. Let me try it again. If you lower the level of water in the bottle,i.e. to increase the volume of air in the bottle, while the mouth of the bottle unchanged. So the ratio indeed changes ( ratio =( volume of air )/ (area of the mouth) ). Right? Taping the plate you are in disregard the volume of the box. Are you? I am not saying Mr. Oakes theory is correct, I am not qualified or in a position to say. If you accept the idea of the existence of such optimal ratio then this is an obvious consequence. Does this (ratio) matter to violin making? It depends on how you make your violins, I think. Like Oakes, he (a luthier of 1889) used trial-and-error if the violin not good (not optimal)he just took it apart re-do it. He believed Strad had an optimal ratio in mind. If someone make his violin based on a Strad then he has nothing to worry, does his best to copy, the best ratio in the Strad was built-in already (he is copying both volume and area of f-hole). I am not making judgement but keeping an open mind on his explanation of violin making theory. (possible nonsense?)

  7. I don't know if you are refering to my post sometime ago about f-holes. I am not a luthier per se but I was quoting what W. Oakes' book said. There is an optimal ratio,ratio of area of the hole to inside air volume. If you copy f-hole without consideration of its air volume you might lose the optimal. I think it is very logical. But some expert here put a resevation sign of this idea. (to me it is obvious,if you think a bottle f water half-full,and blow air on top,you can change the level of water at will to experiement sound would be different. I am not a luthier,please remember. I am not saying to find the ratio,it is silly to do that. I am saying the observaton of its change of power)

My friend passed audition and he told us (after) he used a $30k violin. His violin has power, I know, but I don't know if that was what he needed. Another thing,one time I went to one master class and witnessed the teacher there spotted an advanced student's bad violin very quickly and told him to have a better violin. (first time they met). The teacher did not even bother to look at it. The student probably did not use his main violin. The student played with great skills. It was so amazing. Some people just have sensitive ears.

  10. Hi, IF your violin playability is not to your liking. Let your local luthier check it out. It is a very simple job for a trained eyes. Usually off 0.5 mm here and there. Not big deal. As for the values tissue, I honestly don't know any "better" violins. Better prrices violins are many and all over but nothing striking to me so far I have tried. What annoying me most people talk about them and I have been deprived of having access to any of them. Do they really exist? Give a clue.
  11. Yes, Manfio Thank you for response. I admit that there are subtle differences if I play one note at a time but nothing is striking or stand out . They (my violins) pretty much the same level,I guess. I know there are worst kind like my student instrument I had before but I am not sure the better kind (higher price $5000-$9000). Of course ,I have not tried yet more expensive violins. So I ask a lot of questions. Not that I want to find a better instrument. After 5 min of playing (of mine) I just don't recognize which one I am using. It surprises me.
  12. Hi All, I am using a $4,000 violin for daily practice. It came to my surprise that it isn't any better than my other two violins $1000, $900 respectively. Then I have tried some $5000-$9000 violins in shops, not much different neither. They are all nice in some ways but nothing stand out. I have tried bows too. $3000 bow with gold mounted, good but again nothing striking. Just my experience. Like to hear your experience.
  13. (continue) If someone copies the Strad's f-hole, unless he copies the volume exactly also. Otherwise he would lose the optimal ratio without knowing it. He did not say it but it should be an obvious consequence.

Yes, Mr.Darnton, I would not believe everything he said in his book, especially his opinions ,ton of it, about violin makings, but he knew violin inside out,in one photo two hundred of his violins. His opinion were also with explanations.That is why I call him likable. For example,he mentoned the ratio relation of the size of f-hole to the volume of air. There is an optimal ratio. It makes more sense than the orientation of the f-hole. If you fill a bottle of water half way and blow air to the top, it makes sound. Different levels of water will result differnt sound. It should work the same way with violin? Right? The ratio. He wasn't that opinionated.
  15. Thank you, Mr.Darton, Yes, Oakes's book of 1899, but he was quite a likable luthier as I have read. Nothing is so outrageous as such maple top was said. My guess was that he was frustrated by the fact that people believed there was only one master in this world so he wrote a book.
  16. Hi All, I understnad that there are many luthiers in this forum. It is good to ask this question here, to settle a dispute in my mind what is more omportant ? Neck or Back. I always think that a violin back is important to the tone production only second to the top plate in terms of structural pieces. (so bridge does not count). After reading a book I became confused. I appreciate any your responses.
  17. Very good analysis indeed.( I take it all in with me) Now my question is: " Is Strads sound unique,like signature? " None can make a violin come close ? How close? (Silly question from a limited experience person, better than the cat meow anology,I hope, kidding for only a moment not longer )
  18. Exactly, Manfio. If you ask me,(not a luthier per se),how thick of plate around the f-hole should it be? then I just keep my dumb silence or keep busy looking to a way to a library.
  19. (continue 2) For example, a violin with too big f-holes it won't have power. Too small of f-hole then it would have too much of nasal sound. Leave the job to a luthier.
  20. (continue) He (the luthier) explained the relationship of the nasal sound with the size of f-hole, relationship of the area of f-hole opening to inside air volume, stiffness of the neck to the tone etc. An intersting book.
  21. Hi, I am not a luthier so I cannot speak from experience. I read a book (A Review Of Ancient And Modern Violin Making ) by a luthier, Willian Oakes of 1899, he explained the mystic of the Strads. Basically he said all you just mentioned were neccessary (Good material,good plan,good workmEanship,good control of quality)(all these in your question) and trial-and-error. He saw that only good violins (even Strads) would survive with time and care. Unfitted ones would not be seen or heard in discussion. He made violins box first, bridge (to get the tone), reset the neck (to fit the bridge) in that order,if it was still bad, he would start it over.... No miracal but hardwork, quality control. (opened the top,rework on the plate etc until it he thought it was right.) He spoke of authority with a lot of pride. It makes sense to me.

  23. Hi, I am serious. If you listen to a cat "meow" it is real good. It is natural state of a cat. If you listen to two cats fighting the worst sound anyone can imagine. They are not in natural state. Agree? I am serious.(Stop laughing)
  24. Violin sound from recording is not the violin sound we want to hear. It is a compromise thing. If I have choice I would like to hear them (the Chinese virtuosos)play in person. As the Chinese music they played in that night it was not dramatic enough. Some of you who were in the audience might agree with me? right?
