  2. <p> I've been there to get some supplies and they were very hospitable and happy to talk about their history. There is no sign outside - I think they got tired of people wanting CDs and wind instruments. I believe the ski-lodge next door is run by another of the modern Juzeks. Ed</p>
  3. I remember being very interested to see this when it came out in The Strad. I wrote to Mr. Youngman a couple of times and offered to help get Mr. Paul's manuscripts organised and published. He was not impressed. He was very concerned that all the profits of the book should go to Mr. Paul's widow - and didn't seem to believe that violin books usually lose money. Then he wanted to know what kind of old Italian violins were in my collection. When I confessed that I was just a student and didn't have an old Italian violin collection he lost interest in me.

  6. I agree. I don't make violins but in the past I've tried the yellow/red varnishes on pieces of maple and spruce - very nice red/orange for a while fading rapidly into dull orange/brown. This happens indoors - not related to sunlight even.

  8. And another thing that gets kids' attention is the raw materials that are used. A big hank of horse hair always seems to get their attention, if you could pass one of those around. And some oyster shells (for mother of pearl) - a sheet of real silver (make sure you get it back!), I have some baleen (from a whale's mouth - eeuw!) and gut strings from a sheep's intestine (eeuww!! gross!!).   9. Something I have done, which goes over well, is to pass around things to sniff that have different smells! Benzoin has a really nice almond smell. Venetian turpentine has a very strong medicine-like smell which is very pleasant. English turpentine has a nice smell. On the other hand ammonia is nasty (you need to dilute it to prevent anyone choking) and some people don't like xylene. Citrus cleaner smells of oranges. You can probably think of other things. This demonstration gets a lot of attention. Ed
  10. I could use something like that for branding bows. Although a lot of famous makers seemed happy with their brand at an angle so I never really worried about it too much. Having a thermometer on the brand is a new idea! Ed
  11. Very nice work Brad. I like the very thin super glue too, and the way I keep it under control is to use a scientific micro-pipettor to dispense very small volumes. I use one that can be adjusted from 1 microliter to 20 microliter volumes - I usually keep it set at 3 microliters. In the photo you can see drops of super glue that are 1 microliter, 3 microliters and 10 microliters. The only problem is that the tips get clogged very fast - but they only cost a penny each or so. I try to dip them in acetone between uses but they still get clogged. New pipettors are a few hundred dollars each but you can get old ones for less - or for nothing if you find a science lab that is upgrading to a new model. Ed

  14. Here is a similar bow which I bought at an auction many years ago. It is stamped "Forster". The tip was broken off at some point and replaced (not by me). Here is my copy of it, with a tip as I imagined it would have been. On reflection I think it might be a bit too long and thin. I'd certainly appreciate any suggestions from the experts here. And here is the head of a Dragonetti bass bow. This one is in fact a copy of Domenico Dragonetti's personal bow, now in a church in Venice. I'm indebted to Lorenzo Lazzarato and to Bruce Carlson for getting me the details of the original. Ed

  17. Very nice result Brad. Thank you for sharing your method. When you were filing the new ring, how did you avoid leaving file marks on the ebony? I suppose its a similar problem to avoiding file marks on the head when you fit a new face. Ed
  18. I thought it was a great meeting too. Both Michael and Joe did round-table sessions which were very useful. I got some very helpful comments from one of the appointed judges and at the final show-and-tell with other members and local musicians. It was small but well worth going to. Ed
