  2. Thanks to you, Al and the other experts on this board for the contribution of your time and your knowledge. Mark : We recently had an extremely healthy and very nice sounding Hamm violin in the shop. Although the arching was on the high side, it was well developed (not peaked or pinched), so "digging in" for sound did not seem to cause the problems it does on some other German instruments from that period.   4. Is projection a thing that can be measured? I'm sure it's not as simple as holding a sound level meter at such-and-such a distance from the f-holes. Do you need to play a violin in a large recital hall to tell if it has good projection?

This violin has no real expert evaluation, and nothing written by anybody of any note whatsoever, and this jibberish story that the seller has put forth is something else altogether, and people are willing to dump MORE THAN $10K in it? Something just doesn't make sense here - I've been active on Ebay since it was called AuctionWeb, and I see all kinds of people selling stuff with real appraisals as well as those with hooey stories like this one and they NEVER get prices like that! It is also curious that all the high bidders are on AOL, as is the seller, and the high bidder and seller are both in Florida... If anyone has insight into not the violin itself (as was discussed below), but possible theories on the reason it is going WAY too high, let's hear it!! : What a crock! E-bay doesn't get involved in the actual sale, and issues disclaimers, as you know. So, "churning" is possible between cooperating bidders, to stir interest. On E-bay, as elsewhere, "caveat emptor" is the rule.
  7. : Hello Mark: : Stale hair has no stretch. Take about 300 mm of a single hair, grip tightly and stretch it. Stale hair will snap instantly. Good hair will stretch from 15% to 30% or a little more, before snapping in two. : Bulk hair, if sealed in a plastic bag and refridgerated, will last years before becoming stale.   8. What is 'stale' bowhair? Can I learn to recognize it before attempting to rehair with it? Also, If I buy bulk hair, how long will it 'keep'?

The most difficult thing is to not cut or file original wood as the face is being shaped. : I roughly cut the blank to size, drilling a hole marked on the ivory, marked near the center of the mortice. : Then, I glue the ivory on, tie it securely with twine, and allow it to dry. : Then, I cut the mortice opening with a knife...careful to cut only to the original mortice shape. : Then I file and scrape the outside of the blank to the head shape, then lightly sand with 600 grit paper, polish with a cloth and a fine abrasive, then buff with a paper towel. : Have fun, : Al Thanks, Al!

Thanks for the link. When you look at the list of makers, it really seems quite short considering it covers a few centuries. The letters of the label on this violin are actually quite clear, except where someone tried to finagle the '9' in the date into an '8'. It's clearly a handmade fiddle, with a one-piece back and bold scroll work. The model has a fairly high arch, and is neither Strad nor Guarneri, but my knowledge is insufficient to narrow it down any further. Now that you mention it, I think it must be a false label. It looks to be covered with some kind of stain to simulate age. The one (authenticated) very old violin I have held in my hands--a 1600's Dutch fiddle--was surprisingly clean inside.

I've seen a couple of them, and they look to be made of nicer wood than some of the other manufactured horrors of late 19th-early 20th century vintage. Play and enjoy. Mark
