  1. Hey everyone! Haven't been here in a long time. Glad to be back. =) I need some help.. Can someone explain to me how to play violin with like.. a band? (For my church youth worship team actually) The band includes guitars, drums, keyboard, vocalists.. all that good stuff. All I get are the song sheets that the guitarists use with chords. How am I supposed to determine what key it's in and improvise a violin part on the fly? I've been listening to recordings of songs with violins and I've been able to pick this out: The violin drops back and holds whole notes when there is singing. When the singing pauses (like in between phrases), the violin goes off on it's own little melody leading to the next note/phrase/chord. I really need help with improvisation tho. =P thanks!
  2. Umm.. I thought CD quality was 1000 or 2000 Kbps? I know that a WAV file has that many kbps and a CD is basically several WAV files burned onto it. Or am I mistaking?
  3. Well, for starters, there is the Suzuki Institute of Dallas. (http://www.suzukidallas.com) Some other good private teachers are Philip Lewis, Steve Griffing, Jan Sloman, Arkady Fomin, Emanuel Borok, Victor Rupert, and Linda Cohen. Some of those teachers teach better than others... And some charge more for lessons than others.. I'm sure that there are several others that I know which I can't think of right now.

    Setup problem?

Yup. I've tried Eudoxas, Dominants, Tonicas, and Olives. I found that Dominants work the best. I'll go get it checked out by a local luthier...

    Setup problem?

The more I listen to my $700 violin and the better my musical abilities get, I realize that my violin's sound is a bit.. unclear. The orchestra conductor at school describes it as being "raspy." Could this be a possible setup problem? Any ideas?

  7. One thing that I found which really helped when working on vibrato is to use a metronome to keep it nice and even.
  8. And be sure not to neglect good shifting. Knowing how shift good will help a lot later on!
  9. I would actually enjoy being critisized. Then at least I could know things that I'm doing wrong and turn my weaknesses into my strengths.
  10. How often should you go back and review (or relearn) old music, especially concertos which you've once learned?
  11. I had a teacher told me that music is a lot more than just ink on a sheet of paper. The paper can't make music, you must make it yourself.
  12. How hard is this piece and where does it rank among the famous concertos and such?
  13. I move to the music while I'm playing... My extreme concentration... All my "musical" expressions that I do while playing... And this thing that I do with the bow while I'm not playing. Oh yea, and my spikey hair.
  14. I know someone in my orchestra (attempting to play) playing Mendelssohn after only 3 and a half years of study. Doesn't sound too good though... :/
  15. The playing by ear part of Suzuki is usually only for small children. However, the memorization is a big part of Suzuki.
