  1. I looked at some of the fiddles at Tarisio, and really loved #130, the Gadda, and #131, the Becker Sr. Any thoughts?   2. A very noble and worthy effort. Both fine players. I don’t like it.
  3. One thing to try: if using a cushion or shoulder rest, try to place this as close to your neck (and on the edge of the instrument) as possible. Ideally, the cushion or shoulder rest should be resting on your collarbone area. This will free your shoulders and arms from holding the instrument and lessen the burden. ps: if you haven’t already, try the Wolf Secundo shoulder rest; it has the collarbone curve naturally built in.
  4. Can you tell us why you think this conductor is good, or “wonderful”, as you put it?
  5. Auction sale? If anything, auction houses are the ones providing the most data. Photos, condition reports, attributions, final prices... The major data missing is in the dealer sales. How much time elapsed between consignment of an item and sale date? Were asking prices changed between consignment and final sale? There are no condition reports similar to reports provided by Tarisio...(an unscrupulous dealer I dealt with many years ago neglected to tell me certain things that I eventually found out through a young luthier friend). What was the final sale price? Every dealer’s inventory should be listed online with the asking price. Dealers who use the word “inquire” regarding the price for for an item should have their entire inventory smashed into 10,000 pieces, which they should then re-assemble with only the aid of a screwdriver and a Chinese roadmap.
  6. Just to be clear, I was talking about the 2 that trained under Lupot, not their descendants or younger siblings. Specifically ASP Bernardel and Pierre Silvestre I. NOT H Silvestre, not HC Silvestre, not Gustave Bernardel, not Pierre Silvestre II, not Leon Bernardel.... I NEVER see any violins by those 2 make it to auction. And in MY experience, dealers seem to sell them extremely quickly.
  7. No, they don’t “mark them up”. I believe they are generally extremely overvalued by the side of the trade that determines such things. The value I’m suggesting is not based on what I think of them, but more about how long my friends got stuck with them and how many I always see taking up space in shops.
  8. THIS is something dealers on here should respond to. We started out with a Parravicini violin. Owners of such fiddles should just sell them at $13,000 (after buying them from a dealer for much more) so they don’t get stuck with them? That’s what you’re saying, right?
  9. Stuck... Yea, that’s the thing dealers don’t want to talk about. The time it takes to sell items, on average, by various makers. They’ll sell violins by the two Lupot protégés Bernardel and Silvestre so quickly, before you can even say their names...which should make those violins worth MORE. But they’ll have a stock of violins by various 20th century Italian makers which are extremely difficult to move, sitting on their shelf for years, with steep asking prices. There are no market corrections. Supply/Demand mean nothing. BTW, there are no conspiracies in the auction market.
  10. ps: Yes, I did exactly as you suggested a few times and when I felt like moving on, I sold my instrument within a few months. I care what someone else values regarding 20th century Italians because time and time again, those are the exact violins that people I care about are stuck with.
  11. Except my issue is that a lot of 20th century Italian violins take several years to sell, with many ending up at auction for MUCH lower prices. As I said before, I have SO MANY colleagues and friends who bought such a violin when they didn’t know any better, and then ended up stuck with the violin. I don’t hear of this happening with violins by respected living makers. Those good 20-30k violins sell quite easily. Compare that to an awful sounding and ugly looking violin by Sderci on sale for twice as much! Which has probably been sitting on the dealer’s shelf for 4 years, but is still “worth” whatever they are trying to sell it for.

  14. And it’s been the same over the years.... Dealers just don’t even seem to understand my point about the bloated prices of 20th century Italians. Yet they always have them in their inventory and they often take forever to sell. I’ve seen SO many professional players struggle for several years when it’s time to get rid of such a violin (their old high school violin). At least 3 Bisiachs in there and this was well before y’all decided they were a bargain for 80k. I probably shouldn’t have specifically named Bisiach. But I may as well mention that I dread to guess how much a dealer who buys back a Bisiach for 75k is planning on selling it for.
