  3. Ah, how pathetic do I feel? I've played the violin for *how* many years, and I can't even come up with an answer to my own question. I'm modernizing Phantom of the Opera with a violin-playing Christine. My idea is to have Erik tap into the bitterness that Christine harbors regarding her dead father in order to make her into the dream-violinist that he so wants her to be. (Here's the story; feel free to leave a review! http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2356323/1/) My question is this: Christine's played Bruch, Mendelssohn, Mozarts 3 and 5, both Bachs, and Barber. I want to pick a piece that will be her "Margurite" or so to speak (if you remember, in Phantom, Christine makes her big debut in Faust) that is exceptionally bitter and matches that level. It should be a concerto. I was thinking of Sibelius, but I think that that might be a little unrealistic, and the *bitterness* is only really evident in the first movement. Any thoughts? Thanks!
  4. Thanks so much, you guys. I can sing a mezzo part when I really have to- and even an alto part if necessary- but I'm a coloratura. Do you think there's anything written with that voice type in mind? (I really should have said that earlier)
  5. Do you know of any pieces written for voice and string quartet, or any other chamber ensemble that doesn't involve the voice taking a "soloist" sort of position? Thanks!
  6. How on *Earth* do you teach a parent to tune to a tuner? As pathetic as it sounds, I have a parent who cannot tune her daughter's instrument to her tuner... Drives me nuts.
  7. I saw Shaham play it live while at Encore. I thought it sounded very "Chinese."

I dunno- I could be completely out of my mind here- but I've always just played the note- no harmonic- because I find that it projects better in a big hall, and it's so high that if you don't vibrate, no one can tell it's *not* a harmonic. Plus, to the eyes of an untrained audience, it's quite impressive. (What? Don't look at me that way...)
  9. It should help also to use the octave harmonic against the fifth harmonic. They should match. ie, play the octave harmonic- 4th position- on the a string. You get the pitch an octave above the open a. Then play (it helps to use your first finger so you can do this in unison) the harmonic a on the d string, where your fourth finger would go in first position. They should match.
  10. Well, I'm homeschooled to start out. I get up pretty early, four or five o'clock, and practice in the morning and sometimes, depending on rehearsals, in the early afternoon as well. Then I spend the rest of the day with my schoolwork and stuff like that. You know, I actually had some problems with tendonitis, but nothing too major; when I was 12, I did 3 hrs a day, and gradually worked it up from there. Sometimes over the summer I'd be doing something upwards of 11 hrs, and it never really bothered me...
  11. Yes, I actually was once in an orchestra where there were eight first violins. They ranked us, and then seated us this way: first ranked sat first, eighth ranked sat second, second ranked sat third, seventh ranked sat fourth, so on, so forth. I found this to be rather interesting. But it was only for one concert. Also, seniority usually has a great deal of bearing, as does age (many youth symphonies give seniors automatic priority).
  12. I usually do an hour, then a ten minute or less break. This makes the amount of time I spend in break un-astronomical. I do this seven hours a day, five days a week. On my lesson day, (the lesson is four hours away) there really isn't much time to practice, so warming up for my lesson for about an hour is all I really get. One day a week, I only practice two hours, so these easier days stop any physical problems, or so I'd like to think. I divide my time like this: 1 hr- technique, etudes, easiest slow movement that I happen to be playing 2 hrs- showpiece 1 hr- easier concerto (what I'm doing on the "side") 3 hrs- more difficult concerto. Give or take a few minutes, of course, with the time division.
