  1. I have seen cases that carry two violins or a violin and a viola, does anyone know what the airline policy is for these as carry-ons??

  3. If an instrument has a varnish that seems to be more easily marred than most is there anyway to harden it up a little? Will this go away over time with air exposure? Is this something to worry about?
  4. Thank you all so much for you help, knowing where she is located, and how she was generously lent this instrument which she loves so much I think that the name of the maker has not yet been uncovered. However I may have the name of the person to whom I can write the check.
  5. It has been lent to her and she is using it out of the country. She has been playing it for at least 6 months. The only other viola she ever used before this was an inexpensive rental, until now she has mainly played violin, when she first got her hands on this one she said it was as though god had made it, it was so nice. She is very busy with her life,school, and music, it would be much easier if I were around to find an appraiser. The insurance agent has insured instruments for us before and said no problem just give him the make info and a picture but I thought it would be good to have a bit more information and when I couldn't find it on line thought someone here might know. An appraisal is probably a good idea... some sort of peperwork. No one has tried to sell her this instrument at all, they were just very kindly lending it to her. She just liked it so much and we had been planning on getting her something that I asked her to find out if they would sell it and if so how much.

  7. My daughter wants to buy a Albert Khametov Amati Replica viola second hand. It is rather expensive, not for many of the people here, but to us. I want to get it insured, if we do buy it, but when I google the name I can find no information on it at all.. is anyone here familiar with that maker? I appreciate any assistance. Thank you.

Just read the link from Rviolist, clever... they pass you a bad cashiers check which is more than your sales/lesson price and then ask you to wire the excess to the shipper, or to someone for the violin student's airline ticket. By the time you discover that their check bounced you have already sent pff a pile of money and you are responsible. I heard a thing on NPR where counter-scammers "took" the bait and then had all sorts of similar "problems" returning the money and had the con artist catching trains to strange cities, and showing up at cafes wearing a red carnation, spending lots of time and real money, waiting to get the con money which of course never arrives.
  10. I got one like it selling a car on Craigslist just last month. It was from someone who wanted to ship the car, a 1998 VW Jetta advertised as with numerous dings and over 168,000 miles from Michigan across the ocean to London, England. They asked about the condition of the car and wanted to know the information for shipping. I wrote back and said the car was as advertised and no one in their right mind would pay to ship a car like that across the ocean. They actually wrote me again said it was perfect for what they wanted and inquired how to proceed. I think what they do is get a greedy and naive person to give them all their bank information so that the purchaser can make a deposit in to the account... or maybe they have the money need to transfer funds but can't access it unless some bank fee is paid, can you help them out, and then whatever the scenario, eventually... surprise! As I understand some people actually do this as a living.

On occasion I have heard racist comments/generalizations about Asian players in the classical music world, how they don't have enough feeling... these comments have always made me feel somewhat sick to my stomach.   14. Agreed, strings go false after a while as I understand it they become unable to hold consistent pitch. This happens before they break.
  15. To my mind the whole movement vs. no movement thing is so absurd. Some violinists naturally move and some don't. I have seen teachers take non movers and shove them back and forth as they are playing to try to get them moving, and teachers tell natural movers to stop any swaying around and put that desire into the bow arm.
  16. All of the Mozart violin concertos are secretly very complex because to sound beautiful, they need to be played with ringing tone, as close as possible to perfect. Mozart is very stylized although there is freedom within that style, to play it well, Mozart is deceptively difficult. I would guess that this is why even though the notes are not complex it is often used in competitions. All that being said Mozart Concerto #3 is probably the "easiest" to slaughter.

In my opinion a teacher should always be prepared to demonstrate tone quality, technique, phrasing etc. Not ever using a violin and only blathering on verbally during a student's lessons is like describing how you want something painted, words can't quite capture a picture. If you really want sometimes you need to just show how you want it. On the other hand a teacher that plays constantly is almost but not quite as deadly as one who talks on and on through the lesson. My advice use as few words as possible, get the student working hard, make sure that they are clear what they are working on through either words or demonstration, and make sure that they are clear what they will work on between lessons. Above all keep the student playing most of the time, talking and demonstrating for 15 minutes while the student fidgets and then finally saying try that at home is about the worst teaching method I have ever seen. I think it can be both generous and inspiring for a student to get to play with their teacher a little bit. How they sound is so much richer when played with a great player.
  18. Sort of off topic but A "miss use" of language can however be very useful. We took a teenager who was from a family of limited education and had almost no exposure to classical music to a violin recital. I knew that although he said that he wanted to come with us that it could be strange for him to the point that it was boring. SO I pointed out one of the soloists who I knew was very good in the program before it started, and told him that for violin the guy was like a rock star, that he is that good, and that the songs / music / pieces that he would be playing were the crazy wild avant garde music of the 1700s. A lot of people at the time Bach was writing the music couldn't understand it that well and felt it was too complex like a lot of people feel about the rock songs that he usually listens to. So here is this 13 year old boy surrounded by mostly old men and blue haired ladies with no exposure to classical music watching this plump somewhat homely looking 50 year old guy playing Bach. He sat quietly and politely for an hour and a half, he watched and listened, and he really liked it.
  19. There are different parts of a wedding engagement, the wedding itself and the reception. Often you are hired for just one of the events and what you play for the two is very different. Playing the wedding you generally want music as people are arriving, sitting down, and getting settled, then you play the processional, (it used to generally be Mendelssohn's here comes the bride piece but now seems to gravitate towards the Pachabel's Canon), and then another piece of music is played after the ceremony as people are leaving. Playing the reception get something so that people can dance. Live music, played well, adds elegance to any occasion.
  20. - 30+ year college professor and Curtis Institute graduate charges $40/hour out of his house in Allentown PA....he is also the only teacher I ever talked with who put a firm requirement on practice time....no deal otherwise. This sounds like the teacher to get, if you want progress. I think an agreement should be made before lessons even start about how much practice is required.
  21. Now that is very sad, I would hope that studying a musical instrument and learning about classical music would give every child who undertook it an understanding of humanity and beauty that if anything would help safeguard them from such terrible desperation.
  22. I just watched a couple minutes of a sample from the dvds on how to hold the bow. It was by a guy who obviously knew what he was doing and was very well done. The biggest draw back he can't reach through the screen and correct a bow hold gone wrong. He was clear, obviously knew what he was doing, and what he said made sense.
