  1. Hey! Usually when i play for a hour or so my fingers get red and have little dents from where i put my fingers on the strings.

  3. I AM REQUIRED TO HAVE AT LEAST 90 MINUTES OF PRACTICE TIME A WEEK FOR MY SCHOOL....BUT HOW LONG SHOULD YOU RACTICE? I SOMETIMES PRACTICE MORE THAN THAT! HOW LONG DO MOST OF YOU PRACTICE?!?
  4. quote: Originally posted by MicaelaB: It's easiest to tune if the pegs are in a vertical position when you're holding your violin in playing position. You don't want to move the pegs a whole lot- a little makes a big difference. When the pegs are vertical, it's much easier to grab them. If yours are horizontal, unwind the string and push the end through the hole in the peg a little more. It's a real pain to get them in the right place, but it makes it much easier to tune. Strings are tuned to an open fifth interval (why it's open is a music theory thing). Listen carefully, the strings sound kind of open when they're in tune. With practice, you should be able to tell when they're right. ~*~THANXS FOR THE ADVICE~*~
  5. i like fiddles on fire...it is a fun peice!
  6. hey...well since i will be in high school in about a year...our teachers want us to start tuning our instrument on our own! How do you recommend to tune it?
  7. quote: Originally posted by HVS: Hey all...started at age 10...now im 18.5..been playing for 8.5 years...each day i love it more and more...but as im getting older, i have less and less time to practice =(..but i do try to practice a few days every week for a few hours each day. I do admit, i dont think i am more passionate about anything else than this outside of my studies. hey i was wondering if your school had a regular orchestra and a performance orchestra
  8. quote: Originally posted by Primrose84: as of right now i'm 2nd chair in both orchestras i'm in (school and youth orch.)...i'm usually principal...but at youth orchestra our adjudcator invented scores for our scale since she forgot to make us play one, and at school a friend of mine had a better day than i did...i think the fact that he practiced the seating music helped him too, lol. i got to play (sight read) the solos at our concerts though cause he got strep throat and was absent. when i played violin for the first quarter concert i got 6th chair first violin...and a lot of jealous and amazed stares. that was a kodak afternoon. first chair is great and all, but i always have problems with my stand partner in my way...i'm never in the way when i'm second chair...wierdos!!!! My stand partner and i usually have our scrolls in the way of each other....it is funny when it happens though!
  9. Will your children play the fiddle?!?! quote: Originally posted by glmfiddler: I've been fiddling for 46 years now, began as a child in Oklahoma, my dad, grandpa, and great-grandpa all played.
  10. I have a concert coming up and it is when we are judged ..well my teachers told me to get a mute for the violins. I was curious to know what they do...they never told us.
  11. I still have the strings that were on my violin when i bought them. I want to get a set of better string but want to know if dominant strings sound better??? Also my teachers said that i needed a mute for my next concert...they never really told us what it does...so if anyone knows please post your messages!! ~*~thanxs~*~
  12. Are you studying to have a carrer in music at your college? quote: Originally posted by htrm: I should add that I can play several songs including Ode to Joy (I never really forgot), and can almost play the Can-Can (although my neighbors would probably disagree). I switched from using my $15 bow to using my roommate's 80 year old bow today. It is badly warped in the wrong direction and has half the hair cut off, but it still sounds better than the cheapy.
  13. I've been playin for a year and a half...i go to a school where we have 2 orchestras for each grades(that's 6 total!) I go to large group festival in march!
