  1. Relax about the bow. Life is too short to get an ulcer over it. Besides, the quicker you tell the teacher and promise to repay, the sooner you will know the long term outcome and can relax! CALL NOW!
  2. Been breaking in my new infield reds on my scherl 301 for about a week now. Great sound but I have a few issues: 1. I tend to have to really bear down on them to get the right tone out.(extra rosin helps) 2. Although the "Gold E" is sweet, I slip all over when hitting it's notes. 3. Crossovers from 1 string to the next are not quite as smooth. I was using "Dominants" but they got muddy. Does this sound like a setup issue or are some of these items common to early "infield Red" wear-ins? Anyone else try them? (reds) I have a set of infield blues available to mix/match but I thought I'd ask here first.
  3. I have 2. They have female names because I'm male. One is Vanessa and 1 is Veronica. "V" at the start for obvious reasons and then a name to depict thier character. Vanessa: not too flashy but endearing enough just like the instrument. Then Veronica because it sounds more mellow and stately. Don't worry about if it sound funny to name it.... Do what you enjoy! That's why you play it after all isn't it?
  4. I am playing my 1st violin (scherl 301e4h). Been playing for about 6mo. Looking to move up soon. I like the sound and durability, but was wondering if anyone has experience with one of thier higher end models say the 34e or 3001e? How do they rate for the money? the 301 was $669.00 and is a great starter by the way
  5. Anyone know where I can look to find out where to hear/see chamber music or other stringed events in the seattle/tacoma area?
  6. Hey HuangKaiVun, I admire your abilities but if I had a head as big as yours, I'd have to rest much more often for fear of breaking my neck!
  7. I am 44 years old and started 5 months ago. I don't have an instructor, but have made good use of many online sites and books to learn. I have no music background at all. I have played several solo songs at my church in the past 2 months and am now working on songs with >3 flats as these are the most difficult for me. My challenge now is integrating judicious use of slurs in my songs which has really opened up the breadth of sound for me.
  8. Joint pain is fairly common especially for us older folks. My solution has been "NIKKEN" magnetic wraps. They are made for virtually any body part(including wrists/hands) and are the best on the market! I use them on my left wrist/shoulder after playing and in about 30min. am completely back to normal! Not snake oil, they really work. I know many who have Carpal tunnel and use them with great success! I was so impressed I now sell them. (shameless plug)But seriosly, give them a try. http://www.5pillars.com/nikkenmagneticrelaxation/ You can order online, or better yet, look in your local phone book and get a trial from a local "NIKKEN" distributor then buy only if it works for you! They are a bit pricey, but well worth it especailly if you don't want to limit your playing.
  9. Guess I confused everyone I meant to say I was trying to reach the Eb on the "a" string when the problem occurs
  10. It could quite easily be my grip. I have a tendency to hold it like a vice since i am used to 80lb. dumbells at the gym. I'll try to ease up and be more sensitive. (ha,ha)
  11. I have in fact been using the ring finger for the G# or Ab on the "D" string, but today I've been trying to use my pinkie. It makes it about 50% of the time, but my trouble is trying to get that last joint to arc down when it is stretched so far. I'll get it though.! It does hurt a lot less though. I could only get through a couple of verses before, but now can get through several multiple verse songs. Have only been playing about 5 mo. so it should not be too hard to adapt.
  12. Thanks, I'll work on that and try to use my "pinkie" as an alternative and see how it goes.
  13. This is oldsubguy, not the other posters. I have trouble reaching Eb on th "A" string with my ring finger. Should I try to move my hand down during 5 flat songs as long as I can still get back up to the Bb with my index (pointer) finger?
  14. When playing first position on a song with 5 flats A,E,B,D,G should I be trying to reach the Eb (on the "D" string) without moving my hand or sliding it down to get it? It seems the more flats I try in a song, the more my hand hurts. is that because I should be moving it? I have tried to do this, but with no avail. Any ideas?

  16. I have been playing violin for 4 mo. now but am considering the viola as well due to its larger range. I know that its strings are c,g,d,a, but are they the same octaves on the top 3 as the violin? Also, how would I decide what length to get? I know violin is 14" it seems to me that the longer you get, the harder it would be to curl the fingers around. I am average height and weight (male) 5' 10" 175lbs. any thoughts?
  17. I also try to do frontward and backward arm circles every 1/2 hour while playing. you can also put your left arm out in front of you and then pull your left elbow into your chest with your right arm then place your left arm on the wall about 6"" higher than your headand turn slowly to the right to stretch it the other way. (like in gym class).

  20. Have been playing violin for 4 mo. really love it. But I went into the shop and tried a viola and it sure was sweet. Any suggestions on whether to play both or if I do eventually learn viola would it be best to do it now or wait until i get violin down good first? BTW since the viola has that low "c" string does it go c,d,e,f# for string,1" 2"2.5" or what?
  21. Thanks for the help! Especially you falstaff
  22. IT HURTS IN THE BIG OVAL SHAPED AREA UNDER THE THUMB, BUT NEVER WHEN I PLAY C/F# SONGS FOR EXAMPLE.
  23. How about a program that you can type in notes and it will create the notes on the sheet? There must be something like it?
  24. Anyone know how/where to get blank music paper that one could write their own notes on? Have several song that are 6 pages long which i could condense by just putting melody on less pages.
  25. Been playing about 4 mo. now and noticed after songs with several flats my hand hurts. I think its because of the reach for these notes. I usually have a "vice grip" on the instrument. (probably from lifting 60lb. dumbells at the gym). Anyway, my ? is: should my hand move to get the fingers where they belong or just get used to stretching? also, any tips on how to relax my grip?
