  1. Can anyone give me advice on what to use to clean a bow after a while of rosin buildup? Please be specific on what to use and how Thanks
  2. What sort of problems? I've never used a gut string before. Will it be O.K. with fine tuners?
  3. Anyone have any experience with this string?
  4. Anyone know what type of violin Anne sophie mutter uses?
  5. I have a buzzing open "D" string on my viola. I have tried new string, peg, bridge and bridge placement. I also found a 1/2 inch crack in the upper end of the lower loop of the right "F" hole. Should I use fingernail polish on it? And could it be the cause?
  6. Just spent $39.04 (free shipping) at www.sharmusic.com on Pirastro Obligatos. They are a good contrast to dominants for my violin.

  8. Just got some oliv's for my violin. (wanted to try a gut string), but am told they don't work well with fine tuners. Should i remove the tuners? Also,if not, do I install them by the loop or the ball or with the little felt pad in the hole? Any experience on this. I don't want to goof up an expensive string set?
  9. been playing violin for about a year, picked up a second hand viola and loved it! Any advice on trying to play bith or if i decide to switch? Maybe some info from those who have? color>
  10. The "D" string on my recently acquired viola buzzes. I have used 3 different strings and changed out the bridge. Any other ideas? The peg is not the same as the others, but I see no contact with the "A" peg.
  11. just picked up a second hand viola for fun. On the "C" string what are the steps/notes?
  12. Any ideas on how to start moving down the board? I have no teacher, but seem to be welded with an iron grip to 1st position. Any excersizes that will help?
  13. Just picked up a second hand viola (I usually play violin) to try it out. Like the tone and range but have a few ?s.... It needs new tuners and I wanted to try a gut string for once but in the shar catalog it says don't use tuners with gut. Any experience on this? Also any word on eudoxas?
  14. "vernice bianca"? Please articulate!
  15. Trying to order a new bridge, how do i know if mine is "medium" or not as catalog says? Are there standards i can measure? Also, does a "good" bridge make a difference in tone or only the setup?
  16. Just tried a dominant gold plated e as well with same results.
  17. Just changed out my strings from d'addario preludes to pirastro tonicas. However, the "E" string won't "Sound off". When it is plucked or bowed, the sound abruptly ends rather than carrying on as though you touched the string. I looked in the pegbox to make sure it wasn't dragging any other pegs or strings but to no avail. Ant ideas? P.S. pitch is proper, goes through nut and bridge correctly

  19. Great thoughts! I'll try it
  20. The concept of thumb vs. pinkie is helpful, but will take some getting used to. Thanks for all your help....
  21. When I try to hit an "A flat" on the "D" string or an "E flat" on the "A" string with my pinkie, my volume and tone get lost! Should I try to get them with the "ring" finger or is there a better way to get the desired tone? Perhaps shifting the bow positions? Any thoughts?
  22. Have been playing about 8mo. now and diong well but since I am trying to do some classical now in addition to hymns I have been trying to go down the "E" string. After about the "A" note all I get is screeching, not really a note-like sound. Is this due to a sub-par instrument or just the operator? Is there a difference in how you play these notes? I have noticed also you have to get notes "dead on" on the estring to be right. (P.S. I am playing on a Scherl and Roth 301E (about $650.00) With infield reds.
  23. Thanks steve, but could you be a bit more basic. "afterlengths"? "wolves"? Are you talking about how a string excessively vibrates?
  24. What is a "wolf eliminator? I see it advertised on sites as an accessory, but no picture when you pull it up?
