  1. Thanks for the link. I noticed the plate thicknesses looks very thin all over on that Strad.
  2. I have this device and I think it works well!
  3. That planer looks handy! Looking forward to pictures of the violin.
  4. The texture looks nice. The end grain of the top edge looks much darker, almost black, is this an intentional effect?
  5. Thanks for the visit and the varnish. I put a coat on the violin and it dried much faster than the previous coats I am not completely satisfied overall but I am not at the "stripping" point yet :,-) I think it will look fine once finished and polished out, No doubt it would be better to start over and do everything with the same varnish. Now violating the fat over lean rule etc... But there will be more violins, and there is always the option to redo.
  6. It's a nyckelharpa. Nice tune!
  7. Thanks, this is another instrument though. It was meant to show the effect of shading by adding color. "glazing" I think the technique is called
  8. Thanks for the suggestion, I have done some shading before, but usually by adding color, not removing. Here's an example.
  9. Hi Andreas, I won't try to antique it as I do not have the skills I hope the "fire engine" red will tone down a bit when I apply some dark varnish over it. Maybe this was how some heavily colored Strads looked like when new... , I have also blackened the chamfers as seen on some cremonese instruments.
  10. Thanks for the offer, I'd be happy to try your new varnish. My thought was to apply some dark varnish to tone down the bright red at this stage (this is just ground + alizarine color concentrate) Very sorry to hear about your loss
  11. Thanks, these are hopefully a bit sharper.
