  1. I was drawn to it like a moth to a flame. Unfortunately, it defeated me also, but my IQ is <70.
  2. See John Cockburn's post and then check out his varnish in the Makers' Gallery.
  3. Happy 25th, but sad to see you are still single...
  4. 1. Mark a circle on the upper block - spit on it (or apply another appropriate biofluid). 2. Label circle "DNA source to verify Maker Identity" 3. For DNA sequencing use PCR primers shown on Maker XXXX website. 4. Authentic DNA sequence signature for Maker XXXX available from this maker for the tidy sum of $500 (or free at the International Authentication Repository: www.ouch.com).
  5. I cannot find anything now using the crappy search function in the new Maestronet software. I know that it is possible to search much more efficiently using an external search engine, but, unfortunately, I can never remember the correct syntax when I need to perform a search. It would be great to have the instructions in one place. TIA
  6. There is increasing evidence (alarming) that folks born in the last 15 years cannot read cursive writing. So only 'old farts' will appreciate this document.
  7. Not quite. Perhaps I would accept: A very accurate picture NOW of something that was applied 300 years ago and then altered by restorers, owners and amateurs. Nothing to do with recipe, application etc.
  8. Thanks. Interesting that the Cremonese bars were so much shorter than modern ones. Does that say something about their interpretation of what would now be called "M5"?
  9. Do the heights through the terminal 5 cms at each end matter? If so, how?
  10. I have heard him speak of shit & piss (Equus, not Bos).
  11. Analyses of relative Isotope ratios of the minerals/wood across violins would provide information on the proximity of the water and nutrient sources that the trees used while growing. Unfortunately, the amounts of materials may be a limiting factor
  12. Please clarify: Are you saying that the internal long arches of front and back are the same?
  13. It's been fun to check how my 'eye' has held up after the gap in making ( no templates used) - quite pleased that I have not completely lost it! This is my own design for a 16 3/8 viola, so I have been testing F hole placements prior to finalizing the arch. Edges are still crude.
  14. Takes skill to manipulate wood like that without screwing up the knots.
  15. Back of a viola - wood was too pretty to good to ditch.
  16. These types of 'natural' blues and greys will disappear once a typical coloured varnish goes on. There will only be a small change in colour hue which is 'lost' as the varnish changes colour itself with movement of the instrument in incident light.
  17. Twelve years ago 2 friends met and got photographed beside the Cannone.
  18. I find it impossible to tell colour hues in artificial light, but was very fortunate to be at the RAM at the right time when soft sunlight was on the Cannone. Incidentally, the edges of the varnish on this instrument appear very thick where it has been removed ( I think when the seal on the back was removed and placed on the scroll)
  19. Finally pulled my finger out (after many distractions) and got back to the 16 1/4" viola top. The difference in wood colour reflects the duration of neglect.
  20. Super! My recollection is that there are places on the Viotti where the varnish hue is somewhat salmon-pinkish, as in your side view of the scroll and some of mine.
  21. I have the Archinto somewhere, but cannot find the photos. And just for fun - the Cannone at the RAM too.
  22. Smithsonian identified 'shellac' as the dark substance from Greffuhle design,
  23. Just wondering given the effect of wavelength on penetrance Academic Q if the tanning occurs in the context of 'completely' finished woodwork. V cut or sawn at right angles and planed smooth.
  24. Did the tanning penetrate to the same depth?
