  1. I think that the theory might be that ol' John never immigrated, and so he would not be found in a U.S. census. Based on the quasi-mythical photo on Met Music's website, we might conjecture that he was born (if he was at all) before or near the turn of the 20th century. Jesse--please go to Stowe and do a video interview and post it.
  2. It appears that another sign that the ebay violin market has gotten soft is Jesse's seeking other modes of revenue. It is reassuring, however, to know that we now have a reputable source for wireless fine tuners and bow wax. Jesse: will you be stocking Romanian bow wax? Will you be adding a line of self-adhesive facsimile 17th century Cremona labels?
  3. Gee. Serious collectors only. I guess that puts me out of the bidding.
  4. We've got a 1921 Carlo Micelli at home. It's not the most mellow-sounding instrument around, but I think that's the tendency for Micellis. The label is virtually identical to this one. It looks to my un-finely-tuned eye like an overall authentic item. But no one has bid the opening ninty-nine cents. What am I missing?!? 5. Omobono, patron saint of Cremonese mud-wrestling?
  6. Into the valley of shadows rode Beaux Eau: the violin is unlabelled, but the seller (whom I believe to be reputable) represents it as a student instrument from a violin school in Italy.
  7. I bought a (not-completely-hack-job) white Italian violin as a gift for my son (The Prodigy), which I'd like to finish myself (on the cheap) in clear varnish. Can anyone suggest over-the-counter finish alternatives for truly amateur application? Thanks, all!
  8. Nope - easy as pie - through the f-hole you go. Just a tweezers, a popsicle stick and your choice of glue. I've done it a thou . . .oops - I mean, NO I HAVEN'T! Now, a fake Roth brand to burn in (see string currently running) there's initiative!
  9. Okay--so I heard about cleating the back seam for extra strength. But--can anyone explain this top (other than the Attack of the Cleat Monster?) (sorry - still haven't figured out that live link thing . . .) tem">http://cgi.ebay.com/Old-violin...VWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
  10. It's the rare knobs, and the even rarer petrified-squid-spleen endpin . . .
  11. Frequently an "attic violin" will show damage where mice have gnawed the f-holes wider to get inside the instrument to nest. Here, it appears that a beaver or, perhaps, a wolverine was involved.
  12. I just bought (along with an older violin) an old (or "vintage" as we like to say) violin bow labelled "Bausch" (no initials or "Germany" stamp. It appears to be pernambuco, silver-wrapped, but it weighs in at a staggering 68 grams. Our luthier suggests (with tongue in general vacinity of cheek) that it may only be suitable for playing Mahler. But should I really be looking more at . .kindling?
  13. Tough call. Politicians generally vote themselves better retirement benefits.
  14. It's been noted several times that there are currently one or more persons named Juzek working at Metropolitan Music in Vermont. Gee, if I were a grand-nephew (or whatever) of the purportedly great John Juzek, I'd sure be interested in fleshing out his ghostly existence in these hallowed pages! Are there any maestronetters out these with a relationship with with Metro. Music who could summon the Juzeks out of hiding to defend their good name? Actually, the purpose of my initial post was to elicit comments on Netters' experience or impressions of the Juzek Master Art models, which I understand are often exponentially better instruments than the run-of-the-mill-sell-'em-by-the-crate-to-schools plain Juzeks. (By the way, one of the school systems that had a ton of Juzeks was in Duluth here in my home state of Minnesota, back decades ago when there were lots of tax dollars available from the iron mining and logging industries.)
  15. There hasn't been a Juzek thread for a while. Anyone have current opinions on the quality and value of the Master Art violins? Two dated 1956 (albeit with some repairs/refinishing) have recently failed to meet reserve, and sputtered out at the $300-$500 range. Anybody?
  16. . . . and how convenient: a 'Bathtub Stainer' made with f-holes large enough that the mice don't have to chew pine to get in!
  17. My, what a pretty Heberlein! Any comments from anyone? (sorry--I still haven't figured out how to insert a "live" link!) http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISA...180085193814&rd=1&rd=1
  18. . . .and: what do you think of the violin?!? http://cgi.ebay.com/Beautiful-Vintage-Vuil...1QQcmdZViewItem
  19. I have no reason to defend violinkid--but, at least as far as Carlo Tramonti violins are concerned: if you check the stingnet web site--it appears that Tramonti violins are made in China, and sent white to Bologna, where they are fitted with a bassbar, varnished, and otherwise finished (including the Tramonti label.) Does this make it "fake"? Probably not. Is violinkid entirely forthcoming in neglecting to mention the Chino-Italian nature of the instrument? Well . . .
  20. To deepen the mystery, look at listings from ebayer geraldstockdale (active for only the past four months), and compare the listing format (and the chubby hand in the photos.) Somebody's got a corner on the market for clunkers in the Springfield MO market!
  21. Anyone have any idea where (if anywhere) Friedrich August Heberlein fits on the Heberlein family tree? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...AMEBI%3AIT&rd=1 http://cgi.ebay.com/Fine-Old-Antique-1903-...1QQcmdZViewItem (Sorry--I still haven't figured out how to insert an active link!!)
  22. Branded, labelled, repaired, who's got a guess on this one!?! http://cgi.ebay.com/VINTAGE-MATHIAS-HORNST...1QQcmdZViewItem
  23. I couldn't agree more! And it would be fun to get more replies. But - I grew up watching Mickey Mouse Club in black and white, and I haven't figured out how to post an active link! If you'd be willing to waste the time to help me out, I'll promise to do better!
