  1. Richard, a very nice cello, I'm sure the owner loves playing it (I'm a cellist myself, and it looks like an instrument one likes to play)

    I was going to comment on what you said yourself, the work is maybe (a little too) clean. I feel especially the shape of the peg box (which looks a little too sterile/modern to me for some reason, don't know exactly why) and the scroll, which has this deeper (too refined to be Italian) cut, I'm sure you know what I mean, (I'm only a cellist and not a maker I've no clue what its called officially) are too cleanly done and for some reason don't look like they'd belong to this cello, a rather bold and big model.

    But otherwise, I really like the instrument, how does it sound?

    I agree with you and some collegues mentionned the same thing about the sterility of the pegbox. It was exactly the term used by a big violin expert and restorer of Germany that saw this cello. You really have good eyes for a musician ! You're comments are really good and helpful.

    The sound is beautiful particularly on the bass side ! Powerful and rich. I am really happy with the result.

  2. Crisp and classy, I'll go along with that. The scroll and the corners are that for sure. I'm not into scrolls but I could be if they all looked like that. I'm doing a Montagnana violin right now and the corner shots will be my guide. Very nicely done!

    Don't use the pictures of my corners to make your Montagnana model violin if you want to respect the style of Montagnana corners. I've used a Montagnana model to make this cello, but I did not respected the style of his work. My cello is too cleanly made to respect his style. Search a little bit on internet to find pictures of violins made by him when you want to copy the style of his work. It's sometimes a little crude what he made, but surely interesting. I don't have the courage to work like him at the moment. Thanks for your comments.

    How long did it take for all the wood working ?

    How many coats of varnish did you apply ?

    Thanks for your comments and questions. I don't know how much time I've exactly worked on this cello because I am working for someone else in the Restoration of string instruments during the week and that I've made this cello during the weekends when I've had the time to do so. I guess 600 hours.... There's approximately 6 thin coats of varnish (5 to 7) on this cello.

  4. Lovely. What's the varnish?

    I've prepared 2 varnishes for this cello. I've used a Colophony/Linseed oil ligthly colored varnish after the wood preparation and a Colophony/Mastix/Venetian Turpentine/Linseed oil colored varnish for the colored coats. I've made the first varnish by simply cooking it and the second one was also cooked but I've made a reaction with Nitric Acid to get more color (a little dangerous :) ). I've added some pigments to the colored coats to get the colour that I've wanted, but a really really small amout of it.

  5. I've already made that without any problems ! I was cooking everything together and gave Nitric Acid to varnish a drop at a time. Be careful with this stuff and wear some protection and read about the risks of using Nitric Acid.

    but I am actually slowly starting to search for a new position in a

    workshop.  I take this opportunity to propose my services

  7. I think that Michael Darnton is a nice, a passionate and a

    special person always ready to help the others and to share what he

    knows and tried.  I've never met him but I think that he has a

    lot of energy and that he tried a lot of things during

    his life.  He should be a model for a lot of violin makers or

    simply for a lot of humans.  I hope that I will have the

    chance to meet him in the future.

    I deeply think that this forum is a really exciting way of

    exchanging information and passions and that it's simultaneously

    easy and dangerous to get addicted to it.  This is why

    that I am reading some of the threads but not sending a lot of

    posts.  I will unfortunately never get the number 9999 on the

    counter like Michael .  

    It's already a big task if someone wants to read every single

    message.  It needs a lot of time in a day to read all this

    nice stuff and to reply to all those interesting threads

    and funny jokes .  It takes more time and it's more

    complicated when english is not you're mother language (It's my

    case and the case of many contributors on this forum I

    think).

    I was starting to get addicted to Maestronet I think and I've

    decided to concentrate myself a little more on my personal life and

    on my work (I am still making exceptions...).  I can

    understand that someone wants to cut the link with this forum for

    different reasons.  I see more and more Maestronet has a

    reference guide like a good old dictionary or encyclopedia.

    I don't know why Michael's gone away but I don't think that

    it's a great loss for the forum if he's not there anymore because

    he already shared a lot with us and that this huge amount of

    information is still here for everyone to consult.  He let a

    lot to all of us on this forum like many other contributors (I am

    thinking of Craig Tucker and of many other contributors that are

    still active on this forum).  

    We just have to use intelligently, with respect and with

    conscience this great gift that everybody created

    together for the violin making community and that this monster

    of information is expanding every day....

  8. Don't you think that it might be possible for a future restoration

    to only polish this varnish with alcohol because of the propolis

    content on the surface ?  

    Please wear protection while making this !  It might be

    dangerous !

    don't have enough time to make everything that I would make....

    How is your Nitric acid varnish ?  Are you able to send

    pictures of your tests ?  Are you satisfied with the results

    or would you use other varnishes on your next instruments?

    Hi NewNewbie,

    Thanks for the comments and I really think that the nitric acid

    varnish is a good start, but surely not the only solution for

    varnishing.  It's surely possible to mix this type of varnish

    with other things like pigments or lake dye.  I really don't

    know if there is a residue of nitric acid in the varnish after

    cooking it, but we might get strange reactions in the future

    between the varnish and the different additives added to it.

     This is why I am still carefully  testing this varnish.

     A friend of mine made Nitro-varnish mixed with pigments to

    get the color that he wanted (The varnish was not red enough).

     The results are OK and the color seems to be the same since

    the last 5 years.

  10. Hi Taylor,

    I can only say that it's surely possible to stain bare wood with a

    nitric acid varnish.  It only depends on the intensity of the

    color of your nitric acid varnish.  It 's possible to get

    little color or a lot of color. using this method.

    I am sorry to say that, but it's possible to get deeper colors with

    a 53% Nitric acid (See the link below).  Take a look at my

    samples.

    Thanks for the comment, but what do you think of the varnish

    procedure that I've tried.  Too much unnecessary steps at the

    beginning (Borax and Water glass.....).  I am now testing the

    same varnish in a simplified way and it's also giving good results

    (A Potassium nitrite, B clear-yellow coat and C Fry inspired

    varnish).

    Melvin, I would like to hear your opinion about a relatively

    dark varnish soaking into the wood.  Is it

    preferable to get nice lively flames or is there other

    alternatives like tee.  I've seen a nice violin made by

    Vuillaume that had a dramatic look because the flames where full

    with varnish (I think so ).  I find that It's giving a

    dramatic look to a violin.  A little bit like the

    Vincenzo Rugeri in the last strad magazine.

    Critics, questions and comments are always welcome.  I

    same depending on where you are looking at on the samples. 
    Here’s a list of 3 different processes that I’ve tried
    and the results are similar for the color but not for the way the
    flames on the maple reacts (See the procedures
    below).

    ground.  I’ve made different tests using different types
    of ground coloring material (Nothing, Clear varnish, Dichromate,

    sure if you are right when you say that you cannot let a dark
    varnish soak into the wood because you will get a dirty job.
     I’ve tried it because I wanted to test that since a
    long time and it’s not so bad on maple because the flames are

  15. I am still testing the Fry type varnishes and get good results

     

    I am able to get a dark colored varnish without any pigments

    and I think that I get a nice color.

    Please look at the two pictures of the same sample and tell me

    what you think about it.  

    One picture was taken with the camera using normal bulb lights and

    the other picture was made with the scanner.  The original

    color of the sample is between the two pictures.  Not too red,

    Not too brown...

    Still waiting for other pictures....  Be courageous

    Which suppliers would you recommend for maple and spruce in Germany

    ?  I am planning to do a little trip to buy some wood and I

    would like to have your opinion about the subject if you don't

    bother.  I was already in Bubenreuth in

    the Gleissner company and they are really nice and

    it's always possible to find nice things.  I would like to try

    a new supplier to find other types of tonewoods.  It's

    possible for me to go to mittenwald.

    Do you plan to try the dead canadian standing trees of the

    Northern Tonewood Company ?

    I think it's pretty hard to pretend what type of wood was used to

    build this violin based on the poor quality of the pictures.

     It surely possible that he used a violin picture that he

    found in internet because it seems that he has already taken some

    pictures from the Eastman Strings internet site....

    Sorry, I am a little late on this topic, but it's still an

    unanswered question I think.  There is still a lot of

    interrogations. Why tapered ?  With or without

    tension on the tables, With or without tension on the bass bar,

    Tapered on the back or on the table ?  etc...

    It's hard for me to say what's the best solution or

    explanation because we don't have enough or

    serious theories of this making technique (Acoustical,

    Structural or Esthetic benefits ?).  I agree with David

    and Magnus, that it might be the result of something else (planning

    of the neck, correction of the surface for the table), but I also

    think that it's not the only explanation.

    When I am thinking about that subject, I am always thinking about

    the basses and the viols.  They are tapered on the back !

     It's really apparent ! It might be possible that

    the classical makers made the same thing on violins and cellos to

    give some tension to the back for acoustical reasons or also

    esthetic reasons...  

    When you put a table with a bass bar without spring or tension on

    the gluing surface, it might be possible to close the instrument

    depending on the amount of spring on the back.  If there is a

    lot of tension or spring on the back, you might have to taper the

    sides on the table side also to close the instrument.  If you

    have a tension or spring on the bass bar, you don't have any choice

    I think.  You have to taper the gluing surface of the sides on

    the table side also.  I don't think that it's good to force a

    banana shaped table with a lot of spring on a flat surface.

    There is another interrogation I think.  How to taper the

    sides ?  A flat surface between the upper block and the

    corners or maybe a slightly rounded surface ? 

    It would be nice to get more information from bass and viol

    makers...

    information directly from him.

    We only had a little misunderstanding but I must admit that my post

    was not clear enough .  I did not wanted to get

    the prices of the Hammerl stains, but every Maestronetters would

    like to get the Old wood ground at the price of the Hammerl stains

    if they were in a legally dangerous situation...  You were

    there to tell them that there is maybe a problem with the

    product and it was maybe possible to get a special price....
