  1. I was at the Saturday night performance and have to agree with Jane's assessment: Sublime it was! I had a front row seat directly in front of him, and pretty much felt every note. It was an intense, vivid and just driven performance. It really didn't matter who/what else was there. Harp, cymbals, Slava...whatever! In the end, it really WAS all about that magnificent violin. I, too, am spending quality time with that CD. He'll be in DC in September (for the Lalo). I am counting the days (and my blessings). Zoey
  2. I was at that concert as well (on Friday). I'm a big fan of Edgar Meyer's, so had a grand time. She's a terrific performer...poised, very controlled and intelligent. She did an encore -- Bouree from Bach's Partita #3. I had to head out early, so didn't get a chance to meet her. I'm looking forward to doing so the next time I catch her live.

  5. The entire program was great, including the Sextet. It seemed like they were just a bunch of friends having a good time on stage. From what I could tell, it was a natural rapport and it showed in the music they produced. Must say, I never even heard of Sheryl Staples prior to this weekend, but she impressed the pants off me! Where'd you get HER?
  6. Just came back from NYC, where I saw Steven Isserlis' long-overdue debut with the Philharmonic. The man is fabulous! I got a chance to see him the following day at the 92nd Street Y in a terrific chamber music program. Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful! Did anyone catch him in either?
  7. Strungup: it didn't use to be neutral, but is used as such now. The same was true of "actor" and the like, though. They used to specifically mean male (vs. actress, which was specifically female), but now both men and women say "actor." Same is true of master. You can easily say, when referring to a woman, that "she is a master of her domain" without raising questions. Ditto for concertmaster. Much like "actor," people now accept it as gender-neutral, even though, historically, neither used to be.
  8. Point of clarification: Concertmistress is not a feminist term. Just the opposite, in fact, since most feminists distinctly favor gender-neutral terms and are usually the ones who avoid gender-specific professions. (As an example: they prefer "author" and "poet" for both sexes over the terms -- "authoress" and "poetess" -- that were common in older times.) I suspect that concertmistress is either an older term or one that people simply assumed was in use. The few female concertmasters that I know of, including the one in my hometown of DC (Nurit Bar-Joseph), all go by concermaster, as it is acceptable for both. Regards, Zoey

NYC is an easy 4-hour drive from DC, so I have no excuse not to. If you plan on coming, definitely let me know. I'd be happy to host you, meet up with you, whatever...   18. Saw Steven Isserlis in Philly last night, who was, as usual, fantastic. Got a chance to say hi and couldn't help whining (but just a little!) about his lack of tour schedule information, so he informed me that his website, www.stevenisserlis.com, should soon be up.   20. I'm totally with you, Oldgeezer. I saw Meyer and Fleck in FL and they were AWESOME!! I've seen Edgar Meyer a number of times, including recently in a Masterclass here in DC, and consistenly walk away in awe (did you know he also plays piano?? The guy is clearly too talented for his own good!) Like you, I very much enjoy crossover projects, provided, of course, that they "make sense" and feel natural. In fact, given that composers have a rich history of incorporating other musical forms into their own (Brahms, Bartok and Dvorak used folk melodies in some of their compositions; Debussy used elements of Jazz in his, etc.), it's almost hard to consider it such. I find Meyer particularly adept at meshing his musical words. His collaborations are very effective musically and so never feel "forced." I admire his talent for both composition and playing incredibly. If you haven't done so already, get your hands on his "Short Trip Home" with Sam Bush, Joshua Bell and Mike Marshall. It's all that and a bag of chips... Zoey PS - I've been trying to get my hands on his Trio for Bass, Cello and Violin that I saw live in DC -- and which he composed at the age of 26!!-- but the CD is out of print. If any of you knows how I can find a copy, please share. Thanks!

    That was FUNNY. I spent about 7 months in Scotland and was completely blown away by the rate and frequency of alcohol consumption. I remember being introducted to lager, and when I complained that it tasted like piss, they answered: "Yeah, it does! That's why you need to drink until you don't notice it anymore!" Your joke reminded me of those days, so thanks!

  23. Hey, My datebook says Vengerov will be in NYC on Sunday, February 10th. I haven't a clue where I got this information, and now can find no information on this. I tried a couple of venues I can think of (including Lincoln Center), but no luck, and his website only goes to January. I'll be in the City that day and I'd love to catch him. Anybody know?   24. I have 2 tickets to see Joshua Bell and Simon Mulligan in recital on Saturday, Feb 2nd, at 8 PM. Unfortunately, I cannot attend as planned, but would hate for them to go to waste. The recital takes place at NJPAC's Prudential Hall, and the seats are pretty decent (Center Orchestra, Row Q). Program includes works by Beethoven, Stravinsky, Franck, Tchaikovsky and Sarasate.   25. Hi there. Welcome to the Board! First of all, kudos to you for playing this wonderful -- and grossly under-appreciated -- concerto. It's one of my all-time favorite pieces of music (not to mention the focus of an occasional obsession!). I've listened to Rybar, Szeryng, Bell (and also saw him live), Zehetmair (live only), Zimmerman, Kremer, and a couple of others. Of those, Bell and Szerying reign supreme, in my opinion. Zimmerman is eh, Rybar not at all to my liking (tempo feels all wrong), and I'm totally with you on the Kremer. I'm a fan of Zehetmair's and enjoyed the concert, but don't own the recording, so can't say if it's good. As for getting any out-of-print CD's, my only recommendation is to fish around on ebay or order a used copy from Amazon (it works on occasion, but you need to be persistent). Regardless, good luck with it. I hope your audience realizes they're in for a real -- and, unfortunately, rare -- treat! Wish I could be there...
