These photos are of a recent violin that I consider my best work to
date. I entered it in the Violin Society of America's 1996 competition
last fall, and it was awarded a certificate of merit. I based it loosely
on the legendary "Medici" Stradivari of 1716. It features a remarkable
piece of spruce for the top, with hazel fichte, a type of beautiful figure
that occasionally occurs in fine spruce. The figure is clearly visible in
the photos. The maple in this instrument is also very special. I have
been collecting fine tone wood for 20 years now and I'm very fortunate to
have such great materials to work with. |
