Charles Beare J & A Beare Ltd traces its roots back to 1865, but has specialized in fine instruments and bows of the violin family since 1892. In 1998 the company joined another London firm, Morris & Smith, to serve the continually growing international clientele of both companies. Charles Beare is the current chairman and has been a director of the firm since the 1960s. The other directors are David Morris, Frances Gillham, Simon Morris, Peter Beare and Steven Smith with Michael Selman running J & A Beare Ltd, USA.
The Company’s main activity is at the upper end of the market, and there is usually a range of instruments available from those of Stradivari and the Guarneri family down to the better French and English instruments of the nineteenth century. The Beare Certificate of Authenticity is much sought after worldwide, and very competitive business conditions are offered to the owners of fine instruments who wish to sell.

Our London shop sells the full range of accessories, including fine new bows. Upstairs is the unique workshop which enjoys an unrivalled reputation restoring and servicing many of the world’s finest instruments, and looking after the needs of international performers, chamber and orchestral musicians and amateurs.

Owners seeking opinions about instruments and valuations are asked to make an appointment through Louisa Manisty and to allow three or four working hours where possible. For Certificates of Authenticity, up to two days can be required, and it may take two to three weeks for the Certificate with its photographs to be issued. Due to pressure of major restoration work, repairs cannot normally be undertaken on instruments that were not purchased from the Company, but a speedy and efficient bow rehairing service is available.
